Fazenda Barranco Alto - Pantanal Lodge

 

property description:  Fazenda Barranco Alto - Pantanal Lodge is situated in the southern Pantanal of Brazil, a vast wilderness area in the center of South America, well known for its abundant, diverse, and highly visible wildlife, including rare species as the hyacinth macaws, jaguars and marshdeers. The Fazenda Barranco Alto has been for many decades a traditional low-impact  extensive cattle ranch and is now open for visitors with all new installations. It offers spectacular opportunities for birdwatchers and eco-tourist in general. The astonishing scenery and wildlife will be seen from horses, from canoes on the river, open jeeps and hikes through the different vegetation types.  You will be hosted in several languages by the owners, both biologist and agronomist.

The lodge has only 4 bedrooms, thus providing the guest a very exclusive experience. We are always committed to employing the maximum of persons, so our local community can share the benefits of tourism. You will be hosted 24 hours by the owners or trained personnel, trying to attend all your wishes. All installations are very personal, as if you were in your own house. The kitchen is a cosy corner of the house with a big wooden stove where all plates are cooked.  Dishes are mainly regional and can be adapted to individual needs and tastes. All constructions materials are produced locally on a sustainable basis. Waste is sorted and sent to recycling plants in town. organic waste is composted locally and used in the vegetable and fruit  garden. toilets have aerobic and anaerobic digestors. All activities on the farm are based on sustainability principles.

 

 

In the early morning and evening visitors can enjoy the magnificent spectacle of thousands of birds flying. In the Pantanal there are many types of parrots, egrets, jays, cormorants, raptors, seriemas, plovers, sandpipers, skimmers, terns, doves, cuckoos, owls, nightjars, potoos, hummingbirds, trogons, ovenbirds, tanagers, cardinals, finches, blackbirds, orioles, spoonbills, woodpeckers, tyrants, eagles, ibis, macaws, ducks, hawks, and toucans.

The Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) is commonly seen here and has come to be a symbol of the Pantanal. 

 



Macaws abound within this area. This is one of the last places where the largest hook bill, the endangered Hyacinth Macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) can be seen daily.

 

 

you can enjoy a typical Pantanal barbecue, our pool is the river that flows in front of the lodge, the garden is endless, all property is acessible on hiking and wildlife is abundant. Enjoy the dramatic scenery of 140 freshwater lakes and 15 saltwater lakes with endless forest, savahnas and rivers.

Programs and activities...

We guide all activities according to our guests wishes. You choose what, when and where! Binoculars, fishing equipment and everything else you´ll need for your adventure we do provide. 

Some of the possible programs are:

  • observing animals and plants with a biologist
  • photosafari
  • exploring the meanders of the rio Negro by silent boats and kayaks
  • day and night walks on horses, boats and by foot
  • animal spotting by night with searchlights
  • river exploration and swimming
  • Dourados, pacús and piranhas fishing
  • Horse back excursions could include observing the working farm
  • Camping in the Pantanal and/or picnics outside in the wild
  • workshops in regional traditions such as preparing sun meat, leather working and setting up camps

 

location:  Located 120 Km northwest of the small city of Aquidauana, in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Barranco Alto Farm lies at the Rio Negro (Black River) boundary, in the southern area of the Pantanal, known as Nhecolândia. The property is accessible by airplane within a 50 minutes flight  from the nearest city  Campo Grande or by a 6 hours Landrover ride in the dry-season from May to October.

other details: On Barranco Alto Farm you will have the rare opportunity to witness the morning fishing of a giant otter family as dawn breaks, observe the ritual of alligator mating and, with luck and patience, to look into the eyes of the biggest cat of the Americas: the jaguar.

Besides this, you can live the day-to-day life of an authentic Pantanal cowboy, savour typical local dishes and sleep in a traditional house which offers all the necessary comforts for a cozy and unforgettable stay.

Understanding the mysteries of nature helps us develop a more ecologically correct - eco friendly attitude towards the environment and as such leads to a better conservation of it.

general information

  • Full boarding and all beverages are included with the room.
  • Free of charge 24h Internet access.
  • Free guiding in English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese. 
  • There is no charge for children under 5 and half price for children under 14.

booking and payment

  • Full payment 15 days prior to reservation date is required by wire transfer, 30% downpayment upon reservation. 
  • Please advise the Lodge of the guests' estimated time of arrival.
  • Full payment is a guarantee of the reservation to both the guest and the Inn for the entire period of the reservation.

cancellation policy

  • When cancellation notification is received 15 days prior to the reservation, the deposit minus a $100.00 processing fee will be refunded.
  • There is no refund if cancellation is made 14 days or less prior to the reservation date
