property description: Fazenda Barranco Alto - Pantanal Lodge is situated in the southern Pantanal of Brazil, a vast wilderness area in the center of South America, well known for its abundant, diverse, and highly visible wildlife, including rare species as the hyacinth macaws, jaguars and marshdeers. The Fazenda Barranco Alto has been for many decades a traditional low-impact extensive cattle ranch and is now open for visitors with all new installations. It offers spectacular opportunities for birdwatchers and eco-tourist in general. The astonishing scenery and wildlife will be seen from horses, from canoes on the river, open jeeps and hikes through the different vegetation types. You will be hosted in several languages by the owners, both biologist and agronomist. The lodge has only 4 bedrooms, thus providing the guest a very exclusive experience. We are always committed to employing the maximum of persons, so our local community can share the benefits of tourism. You will be hosted 24 hours by the owners or trained personnel, trying to attend all your wishes. All installations are very personal, as if you were in your own house. The kitchen is a cosy corner of the house with a big wooden stove where all plates are cooked. Dishes are mainly regional and can be adapted to individual needs and tastes. All constructions materials are produced locally on a sustainable basis. Waste is sorted and sent to recycling plants in town. organic waste is composted locally and used in the vegetable and fruit garden. toilets have aerobic and anaerobic digestors. All activities on the farm are based on sustainability principles.
In the early morning and evening visitors can enjoy the magnificent spectacle of thousands of birds flying. In the Pantanal there are many types of parrots, egrets, jays, cormorants, raptors, seriemas, plovers, sandpipers, skimmers, terns, doves, cuckoos, owls, nightjars, potoos, hummingbirds, trogons, ovenbirds, tanagers, cardinals, finches, blackbirds, orioles, spoonbills, woodpeckers, tyrants, eagles, ibis, macaws, ducks, hawks, and toucans.
