burnside bungalows & organic farm

property description:  At Burnside we offer luxurious secluded accommodation for couples and small groups. The surfing and safe beaches of Gracetown and Prevelly are only 15 minutes drive. The Rails to Trails walk track is on our doorstep in beautiful Bramley National Park. Ride a bike or walk North to Cowaramup or South to Margaret River and beyond. Ask about our organic orchard and our crops of olives, vines, avocados and macadamias. Enjoy the plentiful native birds and animals. Wander through the trees and watch the kangaroos come out to feed as the sun goes down.

Burnside Bungalows is 15 hectares (37 acres) in size. We manage the farm using organic and biodynamic principles. We are certified organic and biodynamic with Australian Certified Organic (ACO). ACO has a strict traceability system that guarantees our produce is organic from the farm gate to your dinner plate.

Currently we have two hundred avocados, two hundred olives, an acre of semillon, an acre of zinfandel and one hundred macadamias. Each April we hand pick our olives and press them for extra virgin olive oil. Our olive oil and other produce is for sale in season.

Behind our house we have a permaculture vegetable garden and netted orchard. Currently we have loquats, mulberries, apricots, nectarines, peacharines, plums, pears, apples, almonds, cherries, blueberries, guavas, sapotes, hazelnuts, pecans, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, tamarillos and mandarins planted. Chickens and ducks are rotated through garden beds to keep down weeds and fertilise the trees and vegetable beds.

At Burnside Bungalows we have designed the accommodation to suit the climate and make use of natural energy. The bungalows face north and catch the winter sun, making them warm in winter while verandahs make them cool in summer. Slow combustion wood heaters make the bungalows warm and cosy in the colder months.

Margaret River has a mild maritime climate and the temperature rarely reaches uncomfortable levels making air conditioning unnecessary.

Only recycled and plantation pine timber was used in constructing the luxury spa bungalows. Jamie sourced the timber from salvage yards and it includes oregon roof beams from an old warehouse in East Perth as well as Western Australian jarrah and blackbutt. Deep red local gravel was used to form the rammed earth walls. Granite rock in the garden beds came from a local vineyard where it was removed to allow planting of the vines. Rainwater is collected from the roof to supply the bungalows and all waste-water is treated in an on-site sewerage plant and recycled onto the gardens.

We are an organic farm, which will allow us to market our produce through organic suppliers and means there are no pesticides, herbicides or artificial chemicals used in producing food on the farm.

We have fenced off remnant vegetation and replanted areas to encourage native birds and wildlife. Every year we plant more trees on the property. There are abundant birds, bandicoots, possums and many kangaroos that live on or visit the property from the forest.

We moved from Perth to Margaret River in 1997 and took over Burnside Bungalows. We have three sons Max, Ned and Dan.
Lara previously worked as an economist and stockbroker. Jamie has been a sailor, pearl diver, journalist and furniture maker.

We now work full time on the property managing the bungalows, vines, olives, macadamias and avocados and looking after Max, Ned and Dan. In our spare time we like to go to the beach, visit wineries (there are over 60 cellar doors in the Region) and bushwalk in our adjoining forest.

We enjoy sharing our special piece of Margaret River lifestyle with our guests and are happy to answer any questions you might have.
