ecocabin

property description:  The ecocabin project was born of the idea that rural holiday accommodation should both protect and promote the surrounding countryside.  The design of ecocabin offers luxurious simplicity and successfully combines traditional practicality with technical innovation.

The frame of the building is constructed of local Douglas Fir and insulated with British sheep’s wool.  The external walls are homegrown Larch and the internal walls are lined with reedboard and then lime-plastered.  The floors are finished in native Ash.  Environment friendly paints; natural wood finishes; organic fabrics, towels and bed linen and natural dyes and pigments have been used to create a healthy and chemical-free living space.

Solar energy provides hot water and ecocabin is heated by a wood pellet stove.  Ecocabin uses a renewable electricity supplier and all appliances and lighting have been chosen for their energy efficiency.  All recyclable materials (glass, tins and plastics) are collected and there is a worm assisted composting system for biodegradable waste.

Ecocabin offers a ‘Buy Local’ shopping service (details with booking form) that provides you with the option of a hamper of basic foods and ingredients on your arrival.  Not only will this be very convenient after your journey but also provides an edible guide to the shops, suppliers and producers in the area.  A stay in Ecocabin is a truly unique experience that will capture the very essence of the South Shropshire Hills and help protect its beautiful countryside for the future.

location:  Ecocabin is located in a tiny hamlet called Obley (just a farm, chapel and a few houses).  Obley is in South Shropshire about 5 miles form the Powys border (marked by Offa’s Dyke.  Obley is 3 miles form the nearest main road but is easily accessible along single track roads and you can drive right up to the cabin.

Although Obley feels very remote it is actually within easy access of the more conventional tourist trail.  Hereford, with its famous cathedral and the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge can be reached within an hour and the castle and acclaimed restaurants of Ludlow are only half an hour away.  There are many National Trust and English Heritage properties nearby, including Stokesay Castle and Powis Estate and gardens.

Ecocabin actively encourages the use of public transport and if you are willing to visit without a car I will do all I can to make your stay as enjoyable and as convenient as possible.

Ecocabin has its own enclosed garden planted with wildflowers and native trees.  There are outside eating areas for all weathers and there is a unique barbecue handmade by a local blacksmith.  Locally produced charcoal is provided.

Ecocabin offers the perfect opportunity to escape from it all and you could be forgiven for wanting to spend the whole of your holiday in Obley.  In warm weather relaxing on the verandah with a glass of local cider listening to the calls of the curlews and buzzards.  In colder weather snuggle up in front of the wood pellet stove and wind up the radio or choose a book from the eclectic ecocabin library.  If you feel you need a little exercise, there is endless unspoilt countryside to explore on foot or by bicycle (there is a bicycle hire service) direct from your front door.

There is a utility room with washing machine and sink.  Ecover washing liquid or Ecoballs are provided.

The main living area is a large kitchen dining room that has double doors that open onto a covered  south-facing verandah.  The kitchen has freestanding bespoke units made from reclaimed oak and with recycled yoghurt pot worktop.  There is a gas cooker, large ceramic sink and drainer and fridge with freezer compartment.  Fairtrade  tea, coffee, cocoa and sugar are provided as are a few other larder basics such as oil, vinegar, herbs and spices.

The bathroom is tiled using designs by a local ceramicist and has a shower over the bath.

The lounge is stylishly furnished and centred around a wood pellet stove.  There is an eclectic library, a wind-up radio and a wide selection of games (no television).  Wood pellets for heating during your stay are included in the tariff.

Ecocabin has a small shop (with honesty book) selling a variety of wholefood, organic and local produce.  This room also acts as a recycling centre and secure storage for bicycles.

I regret that ecocabin does not allow pets but children of all ages are welcome.  Cot, high chair and playpen are available free of charge as are cotton nappies.  If you should decide to use disposable nappies while staying at ecocabin you will politely asked to take them home when you leave.
