Have a set of binoculars in hand, and you can spend hours bird watching.

our policies : 100% renewable energies: Our two micro-hydroelectric plants provide our energy; efficient light-bulbs and fridges, portable computers instead of desktops and solar-powered pumps are just part of our effort to minimize energy consumption.

Pesticides, herbicides and dangerous chemicals banned: We don’t use palm roofs for our cabins as they need a periodical fumigation which has a deadly effect on birds and other creatures around. Our swimming pool does not use any chlorine.

No logging and “clean” construction: Of the total 170 acres of private reserve, only 2 acres are in use for the lodge. Construction has been limited to the cleared areas found originally and no new areas have been cut down. We use naturally fallen timber in most of our structures, and only FTC wood in others. We do not use glass windows as they represent a threat to birds.

Objective: 10,000 trees planted each year: We have been a pioneer in reforestation projects. Thanks to our own tree nursery we are able to recollect seeds from many different trees and plant them everywhere around the peninsula. We provide young trees to any person or organization who wants to reforest areas.

Waste management and recycling: We buy most of our food in bulk and use refundable packaging when available. As we have pure water directly from its source, which is periodically tested, we don't sell bottled water. Garbage is carefully sorted and recycled. We have our own compost facility which gives us the organic material to plant new trees in our nursery.

other information:  Wildlife at lodge in Costa Rica National wildlife refuge: We were the first to join an initiative with other landowners to create a National Wildlife Refuge that protects the biological corridor of the Corcovado National Park. In this way, we have put together almost 4,000 Ha to ensure that this part of the world is, and will be protected.

Scientific projects: We have been actively supporting a series of studies of endemic species and wildlife over the years. We are currently participating in a thesis on the population of wild cats (specially jaguars and pumas) in the Osa peninsular.

Along with our closest neighbors, and landowners, we have created THE OSA WILDLIFE NATIONAL REFUGE. In this way, we have put together almost 4.000 thousand Has. (Around 7.500 acres) which will ensure that this part of the world is, and will be protected. Our goal at the moment is to keep growing and to put inside the refuge as much land as possible, trying to get to the boundaries of Corcovado National Park , and protect the biological corridors. This is a slow process. It involves government, MINAE (Environmental Ministry) and money.

Even though slow at times, we have been declared a National Refuge already, and we all have the same goal: TO PROTECT THE FOREST NOW AND FOR THE FUTURE .

getting here:  El Remanso Rainforest Wildlife Lodge is located on the Osa Peninsula, in the southwest corner of Costa Rica. This area has some of the best rainforest and beaches in Central America. We are halfway between Puerto Jimenez (22 kilometers) and Carate on the road to Corcovado National Park, on the Pacific side of the Peninsula just around the corner from Golfo Dulce (see maps).
