selmunett luxury b&b and organic olive farm tours

property description:  Selmunett' is a charming family run luxury bed and breakfast located on the edge of the village of Naxxar , which is more or less in the centre of the island. We have two en suite bedrooms one with bath and the other with shower (Our water is heated with Solar heating units)  and a lovely swimming pool with well established garden for the use of our guests.

The sea at St Paul's bay is a ten minute car drive away and the capital of Valetta 15 minutes away; the airport and golf course are also quite close just a mere 20 minutes away.

If Golf is your fancy, we can lend you a set of clubs. We strongly recommend that you hire a car while you are here in order to take full advantage of your Malta visit, and this can be arranged through us. Other forms of transportation can also be used, such as bicycles, quad bikes and mopeds - The latter modes not recommended in high summer due to the heat. Needless to say there is a very efficient cheap bus service that can get you round the island in no time at all.

We offer our guests the chance to visit our family run Organic Olive farm as part of their stay at Selmunett. The grove is set on 16,000sq metres, with about 10,000 sq metres planted with two varieties of trees, namely the nocellara del belice and the cerasuala variety, with approximately 970 trees planted all together. Around the grove is a large area of wild open rocky area home to many local rabbits, and a variety of indigenous plants.

We offer most of our olive tours around the month of October as this is when we are picking the olives, what usually happens is that we invite guests from different walks of life to attend these pickings on the weekends of October and we offer a full day of picking, a nice lunch along with drinks and the opportunity to meet new people and learn about olive farming in general.

Between the months of January and March we prune the trees, and would still be in the position to offer tours over this period, and have people helping out with the pruning, along with learning about olive farming in general. This would happen mostly on weekends.

Malta was once covered in Olive Trees during the times of the Romans, however most of these were destroyed when the local population decided to plant cotton fields instead due to the increasing demand for this item.  Nowadays there is a large push by the local authorities to replant a large quantity of olive trees, in fact within the last 5 years there have been 30,000 trees planted.

accommodation: Selmunett has two Bedrooms: “Tal Avucat” is a large bedded room with en suite bathroom (bath) and coffee/tea making facilities. “Tal Kurunel” is a large or twin bedded room as required with en suite bathroom (shower) and coffee/tea making facilities.

Selmunett  has a maid that looks after the property during the week and beds are made on a daily basis. It is normal for guests to be out of the house after breakfast and not back before 4pm so that we can carry on running the house.

During the winter months beds are made the continental way using a continental quilt and in summer just with sheets as a cover, however blankets are also available for those who suffer from the evening chill.

We have coffee/tea making facilities in the rooms, and  breakfast is catered for by us whether it is continental or English. In summer and if weather permitting in winter we cook in the garden using a Barbecue and if weather is inclement we cook in the kitchen where breakfast is also available.

We do not provide evening meals on a regular basis, however we do tend to have Barbecues with the family on a regular basis and guests are welcome to join in for a nominal charge, failing this we have a full list of restaurants, pubs and bars that we recommend listed and can arrange to have you dropped and picked up after the meal for a nominal charge.

We  have a number of pets at the property (Sacha and Max the Boxers, Suchi the Cat and last but not least Bruno the Lop Rabbit), however guests pets are not catered for at the property.

All water in the house for the 4 Bathrooms, 1 Spare Toilet and Kitchen are heated by 2 solar systems, booster basically only works during January, February and half March purely because of lack of Sun. All rooms have mosquito netting as on warm spring and summer evenings there is always a pleasant breeze. Should our guests prefer, we can offer electric fans which are found in all the bedrooms and can also be moved around the guest areas as required.

We grow most Citrus fruits, Pears, Peaches and Plums as well as Pomegranate and Bambinella in the garden,  the fruits of which are pressed and drunk fresh or at times when we have an abundance of fruit we make Jam and Marmalade.

We grow our own Olives, 11 trees in total which so far are giving us a yield of roughly 15 to 20 kilos per annum, the olives of which are kept in brine for one year and then consumed as table olives in oil. The larger olives are used to make Olive Pate “Tapinade”.

We also purchase seasonal tomatoes and over the years have mastered the knack of producing excellent sun dried tomatoes mixed with secret ingredients, to be consumed with an aperitif and eaten on dried Maltese biscuits.

We also mulch all cuttings from the Garden, nothing is thrown away it is mulched and by time converted into compost which is spread around the garden in order to help the growth of other plants.

We also believe in recycling our rubbish as requested by Government and all relevant dividable bins are available for this reason.

Finally we have also made arrangements for holistic body-mind solutions that can take place in nearby St Paul ’s bay or by special arrangement at Selmunett to include any of the following, please get in touch for further information.

  • Full body massage
  • Skin Cleaning
  • Skin moisturizing
  • Reflexology
  • Indian Head
  • Reiki sessions

Apart from the above mentioned items that are all in house items of Selmunett we have a family run Olive plantation in the North of the island with 1,000 olive bearing trees that are grown for their oil.

Period January to March trees are pruned to prepare them for the Olive growth, these of which are ready to be cut around the beginning of October, olives are hand picked using rakes and nets, a most enjoyable day affair where friends and relatives are asked to spend a day olive picking which culminates in a very nice buffet lunch prepared by the lady of the house, a most enjoyable and relaxed day where the grown ups pick olives and exchange ideas, the children play together and the dogs take it easy in the sun.

All the above mentioned activities can be enjoyed by residents of Selmunett basically free of charge.

The Olive plantation is also an excellent venue for groups who wish to have an event in a relaxing environment, Team building can be arranged, sampling of olive oil and other Maltese delicacies can be enjoyed, culminating with a coffee and Maltese liqueurs prior to departure. The location has ample free space and is directly in the country accessible with Jeeps or Mini Busses.

surroundings:  we have three Barbecues in fact two are gas powered and the third is charcoal powered, depending on which side of the garden one is on the appropriate barbecue is used, We  have a swimming pool that is for the use of family and residents alike. There is ample space in the garden which well established with fruit and ornamental trees and creepers, all of which are Mediterranean based, and  various terraces overlooking the garden and a sunbathing roof with sea views and a view of the island of St Paul where the apostle St Paul was shipwrecked in AD 60 and further on out to the sister island of Gozo.

Malta is steeped in History  one has to bear in mind that there are Temples dating back 5,000 years ago, to be followed by the period of the knights, to be followed by the period of the two great wars, followed by Malta becoming a Republic up to present day, so there certainly is an abundance of what to see. Malta is not just two weeks of sitting on the beach or round the swimming pool, it is about getting around!
